No one could have predicted that the concept of open systems for use
with products from a broad range of manufacturers would catch on quite to the extent it has.

特别是"...would catch on quite to the extent it has" 怎么理解呢？

另外，

spent well over 30 years on building a comprehensive enterprise data mode

这段话怎么理解？

"catch on" is 流行，so "catch on quite to the extent " means something 流行地非常快。

在90年代初，当标准参考模块可实用后，(Someone) 用30年建立了一个全面性的企业数据模块的工程马上就被宰了。

"can" used as verb means cancel, terminate, eliminate.
