In chess, when a pawn reaches the last row of opponent's territory, it can be substitued to anything player desires, so that pawn is the wildcard, usually player choose queen since it's the most powerful one. Similarly, in card games, like Uno, wild card is the card that can be any value player decides, it's usually used when player is in a bad situation. So wildcard can be loosely translated as secret weapon.
