the following is an excerpt from JMX in Action (Manning publisher):

Try filtering the MBean list on your own; doing so will help you get the hang of the ObjectName format. When you are done, return the filter to *:* so you can view all MBeans.

"get the hang of something" means learning the basics of something new.
开始掌握

e.g: After many tries and falls, I started to get the hang of skiing.
经过多次跌打滚爬，我开始掌握滑雪技巧了。
