What is Mozilla?

This is a complicated question because there is more than one Mozilla, so I'll go ahead to explain and clarify each of them:

Mozilla the code name
The code name for the product that became Netscape Navigator, and later Netscape Communicator. The name was derived from the fact that the first Netscape Navigator was intended to be the "Mosaic killer." Mosaic was the first graphical web browser and quite popular during its time.

Mozilla the Mascot
In 1994 Dave Titus created the official mascot of the Netscape Communications Corporation, the green dinosaur affectionately known as Mozilla. Images of which can be found at the Open Directory Project. There has also been a variation of Mozilla as the red Tyrannosaurus rex seen in the decorative graphics used at mozilla.org.

Mozilla the Organization and the Browser
On March 31, 1998 Netscape released their browser source code under an open source license and created a nonprofit organization, mozilla.org, to oversee this. The idea was to create a successor to the Netscape Communicator 4.xx series with a pool of outside talent.

Because mozilla.org is developer oriented to work on the browser code, it was never meant to directly produce a commercial consumer product. However, other companies, or even individuals, can create their own browsers based on Mozilla. For example, Netscape 6 is created from Mozilla's source code.

The focus of this entire FAQ is centered around mozilla.org and Mozilla the browser.
