I think direct-to-plate is for books, and direct-to-press is for newspapers. The process is directly from author's final draft(worked with editors) to the printing press. For books, they make severl pages on a plate and then use plates to print books. These plates, I think, are made of some kind of paper, very hard. I used to have some of these plates when I was young.
