My understanding:
Curve here means change or change of direction.
You sense/notice/find that some change is happening or is going to happen, you take some action, to learn/do something, "ahead of the curve".

Take a look at this link, you probably can feel what it means.

In a curved mothion, your velocity direction is changing all the time, even you keep a constant speed. Smile

I think this is from baseball games where the curve of the ball throwed has big impact of how the player hits it. So Ahead of the curve means you can predict the curve and thus handle it well. The extended meaning is that you are more advanced than the current situation or whatever.

To floater:
I could not find any connection between "ahead of the curve" and baseball. Sad

If you do a google search on "ahead of the curve" the first 5 pages will not have any baseball even mentioned. I did not go further...

However, I could not find the precise definition of "ahead of the curve" either. Maybe it just too common used phase to be explained...

Everyone understands it, that is the good part...

I don't think "ahead of the curve" has anything to do with "in cutting edge".

Also, there is no such a English phase "in cutting edge", which does not mean anything to me.

If you do a google search, you will find nothing with the invented-by-jarjarbean-phase Wink

"in cutting edge".

Of course, you have the right to invent your own English...
