"step up to the plate" means 当其他人都为畏缩不前时，ABCDE 站出来担当重任，把project搞定。

“sweet spot" means the best compromise among conflicting factors. For example, laptop's performance and weight are two contradicting factors, better performance means more weight, and less weight often means less performance, so if a laptop has pretty good performance and not too heavy is likely to hit the sweet spot and become a best seller. 甜点 probably is not the best translation for this. Smile

belt and brace? I don't think that's a common idiom.

in fact, I asked the 'step up to the plate' meaning to my customer directly, his answer is come forward and take on the challenge, siimiliar with your exmplanation. Smile

belt and brace means you do one thing by two ways to guarantee the thing is done. 双保险. Smile

my personal understanding is use belt and brace to keep your pants not to drop on the ground. Smile

用吊带和腰带来保证裤子不会掉下来. Wink

you can find its usage in Martin Fowler PEAA book.

what I expect more is where to find the special words/idioms meaning online or any cool dictionary collecting them? you know, I would like to ask my customer again for another praise. Smile

now I found another two idioms: fly by the seat of their pants, lucky draw. endless learning, right? Smile

"lucky draw" literally means what it is. 幸运抽奖。 For example, a popular computer science class only has one more seat available, but 5 students try to take that class. So they decide to draw drinking straws, 1 of 5 straws is shorter than others. One person hold the bottoms of 5 straws in his fist, keeping the top same level, so nobody know which is the shorter one. Each of 5 students take a straw, who has the shorter one is the lucky winner.

I never heard anyone used the idiom "fly by the seat of their pants", from searching google, I think it means acts on intuition, 凭直觉做事。

I've heard belt and brace, but not fly.... thing.

Also, slang are regional too. Southern americans have different slangs than northern americans.

The best approach is whenever you don't understand, just ask around. There is no shame for that. If you don't know and are afraid of asking, that's a shame. I learn this from americans. I think it's a good and practical approach.

the plate in the "step up to the plate", I think, was the begger's bowl originally. You step up to donate something, or do something not everyone would do. You have the guts and courage to do something, like giving food to vagabonds.
